Santa Barbara - Salt Marsh
We're working with a grey area here. The area near Santa Barbara California is home to several marsh areas. We chose to place it here in the land biome section. Marshes and wetlands are usually classified as aquatic biomes. Wetlands are low-lying areas, often near the coast. In the case of Santa Barbara, water from the Pacific Ocean moves inland and creates a salty marsh environment. Because there is runoff from neighboring creeks and rivers, the salinity of the marsh and wetlands is lower than the ocean. This lower salinity allows for a wide number of species to grow up in the area. On the surface, you will quickly notice migrating birds and insects. Closer inspection will reveal snakes and lizards moving through the sand and grasses. In the water, small fish, insects, and millions of microorganisms complete this active area. This image shows an ecotone that occurs between the sand dune region next to the shore and the start of the salt marsh.
