North Cascades - Temperate Forest

North Cascades

You will find an incredible variety of ecosystems in this park. North Cascades National Park is known for its valleys at sea level and the glaciers that cover the peaks at over 8,000 feet. Between those two extremes you will wind subalpine meadows, old-growth forests, alpine ridges, and montane forests. Established in 1968, the park is also home to several dams along the Skayit River and lakes created by the dam system. Probably the most famous features of the park are the over seven hundred glaciers that cover the peaks. The Cascades are the result of tectonic activity that forced rocks upward. They are now being eroded by glacial action and constant runoff.

This image shows one of the old growth forest areas of the park. This image shows the biome in summer, only a few weeks after the last of the snow melted. It is a moist and cool area with long winters. The short summer period forces all of the plants to grow quickly and emerge from their dormant state to take advantage of the long, warm days.
