Mojave Desert - Desert

Mojave Desert

Mojave National Preserve is a park found in southern California about thirty miles from the Nevada border. The preserve was established in 1994 and protects a huge variety of habitats including volcanic cinder cones, large sand dunes, dense Joshua tree groves, and even a set of underground caverns. We visited the reserve in late April and were greeted with a spring storm moving through the park. The altitude of the park, which ranges from 900 to over 7,000 feet, provides a variety of environments where temperatures and rainfall vary greatly throughout the year.

Although we also have a desert image from Death Valley, we wanted to highlight the spring months in a desert. The Mojave Desert winters can see large amounts of rain. While the immediate effect might be flooding, all of that water spurs the growth of desert wildflowers each spring. Here you can see acres of spring flowers covering the desert floor. Insects and small animals are out during the mild days to take advantage of the short-lived food supply.
