New Zealand - Milford Sound
Milford Sound in New Zealand is an example of a coastal formation called a fjord. The characteristics of a fjord are tall steep cliffs surrounding a relatively deep saltwater bay. The ocean is at the mouth of the fjord and freshwater streams in from the other end. While that freshwater source may be a river, it is often glacial runoff. The freshwater in Milford Sound is taken out to the Tasman Sea with every new tide. Varieties of animals create their homes in the sheltered areas, but species variety is often limited because of the cold waters. You might find fjords in Norway and New Zealand, but not in tropical areas such as Hawai'i.
