Joshua Tree - Freshwater Reservoir
Joshua Tree National Park is located in southeaster California just a few miles from Palm Springs. The park was only recently established by congress in 1994. If you're going to be at the park for sunset, be sure to visit Keys View for a panorama that look across the Little San Bernadino Mountains. Most visitors to the park marvel at the wide variety of flora and fauna in this desert landscape. There are oases with palms that survive on underground spring water. Those oases provide homes to many species of mammals, reptiles, birds, and insects. As you drive through the park, you will also see excellent examples of granite bedrock formations. You're probably wondering how we can highlight an aquatic biome in a desert. There is a small location in Joshua Tree called Barker Dam. It's worth the side trip to follow the path to a large freshwater pond. The water is home to insects, algae, and plants. Animals from around the area also travel to the spot for a small drop to drink during the super-hot summers. We don't know if there were fish in the water. We didn't see any. The water was originally dammed to help provide water for cattle.
