Hawaii - Coral Reefs
The Hawai'ian islands were created by volcanic action. In the middle of the Pacific Ocean are huge underwater mountains that break the surface as Hawai'i. Varieties of unique organisms live in this underwater ecosystem. There are fish that live their entire lives on the reefs and migrating fish and mammals that stop at the islands as a rest stop on longer journeys. The humpback whales are well-known mammals that come to Hawai'i to reproduce, give birth, and nurse the young calves. While this picture shows a beautiful sunset, there is a lot of action just under the surface. Other islands in the South Pacific Ocean have been created around coral reefs. Sediment and silt have slowly built up and surface plants took root. Over time, islands formed where plants, animals, and people live. Although their development is completely different than the islands of Hawai'i, we wanted to make sure you knew there were different types of islands in the Pacific.
