Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay
This image of the Golden Gate Bridge shows the northern opening of the San Francisco Bay. The California bay area is defined as an estuary. Saltwater from the Pacific Ocean and freshwater from a variety of rivers combine in one location to create this in-between aquatic biome where unique creatures live. Estuaries are often good places for fish to come and lay eggs. When those fish hatch, they are in a protected environment where they can mature before returning to the ocean for their adult lives. You will also find many birds in estuaries because of the large amount of food. Because the salinity of the bay is so dependent on the amount of salt water, the consistency of the bay changes every day with the tides. During the winter rainy season, the salinity drops as rivers dump large amounts of freshwater into the mix.
